Horween Leather Watch Straps

How a strap is put together

A watch strap gets more use than almost anything you own: against your skin all day, folding at the same two points. So we skive the leather by hand, stitch it with Vinymo thread and stain every edge. Every one gets a matching floating keeper, a stainless steel buckle and quick-release spring bars, made to order in our California workshop.

The leathers

Eight of the nine leathers here are Horween, tanned in Chicago. Shell cordovan has a shelf of its own: hand-dyed, cut as a single unlined layer, eleven colors. The Classic Horween series is Chromexcel, Dublin and Cypress, finished clean and even, and it takes on a glow with time. The Vintage series is Aspen, Derby, Yellowstone and Waxed Flesh, picked for character. Those show their patina from week one. The ninth leather is not Horween at all: American alligator, matte and scaled, cut from the belly panel.

Two constructions

A lined strap has a vegetable-tanned backing behind the outer hide, so it holds a crisp line and won't stretch. An unlined strap is one thicker layer that softens fast and takes the shape of your wrist. Lined runs 2.0 to 2.4mm, unlined 1.6 to 2.0mm.

Finding the size

Lug widths run 12 to 24mm, straight or tapered. A taper is written as two numbers, so 20/16mm is 20mm at the lugs and 16mm at the buckle. Lengths come in three, Short (105/65mm) to Long (125/85mm), or set each side yourself as a custom length. Not sure? The sizing guide walks through all three, or tell us the watch and we'll confirm.

Or start from the watch: 18mm, 19mm, 20mm, 21mm, 22mm and 24mm. Or from the color: brown, black, burgundy, navy, tan or natural.
