Aspen, Derby, Yellowstone and Waxed Flesh straps from the Horween tannery: high-character leathers that show their patina from the first wear.
Four Horween leathers chosen for character rather than uniformity: Derby tumbled to a worn-in surface, Yellowstone with a coarse shrunken grain, Aspen with a distinctive grain and polished luster, and Waxed Flesh, the roughout side of Chromexcel under a heavy wax. Every strap arrives already showing its patina and keeps deepening with wear, lined and stitched to order in our California workshop.
Most leather looks its best after a year on the wrist. These four don't wait. Horween tumbles, shrinks and waxes them at the tannery in Chicago, IL, so the character a strap normally has to earn is already in the hide by the time we cut it.
You'll see color that moves across a single strap, grain that catches the light unevenly, and marks that read as wear rather than as damage. If you'd rather have a band that looks the same on day one and day five hundred, the Classic Horween series is the other half of this shelf.
Derby is tumbled and infused with waxes until the highs and lows of the hide take color differently - the most distressed of the four, and the one with the strongest variation. Yellowstone has a coarse, shrunken grain, with color that shifts between the tips and the valleys. Aspen is the most restrained: a distinctive grain under a polished luster, like a well-worn vintage leather jacket. Waxed Flesh is the odd one out, the reverse side of Chromexcel under a heavy wax, so it's a nap instead of a grain, and it's water resistant.
Every strap here is lined with vegetable-tanned leather, which is what keeps a soft, heavily worked hide from stretching over the years. They run 2.0 to 2.4mm thick, stitched with Vinymo thread and stained along every edge, with a matching floating keeper and stainless quick-release spring bars so you can swap one without a tool.
Lug widths run 12 to 24mm, straight or tapered, in three lengths or a custom one, made to order in our California workshop. The sizing guide covers how to measure both.
