Color 8 and its neighbors

Most of this shelf is Horween's Color 8, the deep oxblood the tannery is best known for. It's here in shell cordovan, which is the color most people mean by cordovan, and in Chromexcel and Dublin, where the pull-up lets a lighter red through wherever the leather bends.

Three here aren't Color 8: Garnet shell cordovan, a jewel-toned red brighter than oxblood; Burgundy Cypress, smooth and tight-grained; and Burgundy Aspen, with Aspen's polished grain.

Why oxblood works on most watches

Burgundy reads as black at a distance and as color up close. That's why it pairs with a steel case as easily as black does, and with a gold one better. It's the traditional strap color for a dress watch with a white or cream dial, and it warms a blue dial instead of fighting it.

Construction and fit

The two shell cordovans are unlined; the other four are lined. All come in 12 to 24mm, straight or tapered, and three lengths or a custom one. If the width is in doubt, the sizing guide shows how to measure it in a minute.
